Many wide area networks position computers in a hierarchy in which a mainframe computer at the National Headquarters will be linked to a few regional mainframe/supermines each of which in torn will have several local micros reporting to them, and each local mini may have several micros reporting to them. In a hierarchical system, several processors share the processing load.
