An operating system (OS) is an integrated collection of programmes which take control over the operation of a computer to the extent of being able to allow a number of programme to be run on computer, without the human intervention of operators. In general the operating system is software programmes which acts as an intergace between the user of a computer and the computer hardware. The purpose of an operating system is to provide an environment in which the user may execute programes. The primary goal of an operating system is to make the computer system convenient to use. A secondary goal is to use to computer hardware in an efficient manner.
Functions
(a) Sheduling and loading of programmes.
(6) Controlling the over hardware resources (Input/Output), secondary devices etc.
(c) Handling errors.
(d) Protecting hardware software and data from improper use.
