Data communication system provides the transport of data and information between and among the computers. Data communication provides the connections to computers located in the far reaches of a country and the world. The computer facilities are tied together by data communication components, forming a network of automated resources to support the many functions of a business or organisation.
Data communication is a vital part of the information society because if provides the infrastructure allowing the computers to communication with one another. An airline reservation system uses data communication to link the reservation offices to the computer. The space flights and the space shattle use data communications system to send data to and from the rockets and the command centres of earth. Office workers are dependent on networks to provide the use of data files and computers to different departments in an organisation,
The purposes of Data Communication System
Even though the many components that comprise data communications systems and distributed networks may appear to be complex, the purpose of this technology is very simple: the transport of user data between and among user machines. All aspects of data communications are designed to meet this one goal. The user machines are typically computers, workstations and terminals. From the stand point of the data communications system, it makes no difference what wype of machine is sending and receiving data. It could be a large-scale IBM mainframe computer or a small PC. But the purpose remains the same
The Components of Data Communication System.
Three components are required in a data communication system. There must be a transmitting device, a receiving device, and some type of medium to carry the data between the transmitting and receiving devices. The transmitting device can take many forms. It may be a user computer or an specialized communications device such as a modern or multiplexer. This same concept holds true for the receiving device. It may be a user computer, or a receiving modern or a receiving multiplexer. The medium may also take many forms. It may be copper wire that carries electrical signals that represent the user data. It may be a radio wave that is alterred in various ways to represent data. It might be an optical fiber in which light signals are changed in according with certain conventions to represent the user data. The following figure shows the components and connections in a data communication system.
